Fashion for preppy dogs

Reuters reports that Crew Group Inc., known for it preppy human clothing, has applied for trademark protection for crewmutts, a line of dog accessories, according to a filing with U.S. regulators.

J Crew filed a trademark application on May 16 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for crewmutts, which would include dog products ranging from clothing, leashes and beds to food, bowls and toys.

The Rake Today has a Westie in a classic rugby shirt, but Scottie News is holding out for a monogrammed sweater like the ones above.

Meanwhile for dogs that don’t wear clothes, This Green Life is recommending sunscreen for certain pets.

Nobel prize for dog lit

“FDR had a beloved pet named Fala, a Scottie dog, and were he alive today the famous Fala, no doubt, would have penned (or pawed) his own memoir, such is the current insatiable demand for dog books, kicked off by John Grogan’s mega-hit, Marley and Me.”

Scroll down for this summer’s suggested dog reading list from NPR. We think Thomas Mann’s Bashan and I, which is also known as A Man and His Dog is probably the best dog story ever. Alas, most Mann translations, including our own dog-eared copy, are pretty bad — apparently because the contract went to the American publisher’s mistress or some such thing. While the new versions are supposed to be a lot better, we can’t vouch for them.

A Man and his Dog can be found in the standard Mann short story collections. And as an added bonus you’ll get Death in Venice. Mann is such a great writer that the power comes through despite the translator’s stilted style. Can’t recommend it highly enough. This is one Nobel Prize for literature recipient whose work has actually stood the test of time.

One year old today. Wouldn’t a cake like this be nice?

Scottie News can’t figure out what’s going on in this old newsreel. It must be that crucial footage is missing. Here’s the explanation: “New York City: During one of the most unusual stomach operations ever performed on a dog, Scotch terrier Sandy starts a journey to Limbo, but a quick-acting veterinary brings the animal back to life and later makes a successful blood transfusion on the dog.”

Ninja seems to be one of those words that can mean anything to anyone. Good Scottish Terrier video, though.

Elwood, a Chihuahua crossed with a Chinese Crested dog, has won the the world’s ugliest canine title. And boy does he deserve it.

The wrong kind of Chihuhua cross is not a pretty sight as Scottie News pointed out when it reported on a not-so-nice-looking Scottish Terrier Chihuahua cross.

Of course, we all know that looks aren’t everything, right?

Our journalistic colleagues at Foreign Policy magazine have informed the Scottie News that Russian President Vladimir Putin — known for dissing President Bush’ Scottie Barney and Scottish Terriers in general — has been involved in more dog bullying.

Apparently he tried to intimidate German Chancellor Angela Merkel with his lab Koni. No mention, however, of Putin’s secret poodle.

You just can’t trust a guy who doesn’t like Scottish Terriers (and used to work for the KGB.)
