Judging irregularities plague competition

Oh dear. It looks like two people believed they were Judge Merg because two people judged the Halloween contest.

Presumably this happened because two people correctly answered the last Scottish Terrier and Dog News trivia quiz – one by posting in the comments section and the other via e-mail.

The Scottie News editorial department thought they were one and the same but it appears they were not. Thus we had one winner picked by the e-mail judge and another winner picked by the comments judge.

Since we don’t want to put ourselves in the awkward position of breaking the tie, we are declaring two winners — Elvis aka Baily and Skunk Girl.

Here’s what the judges had to say:

Judge Merg I

First Place
– Baily as “the King”. A great effort! The costume curls and the natural eyebrows sort of merge together.

Runner up – Anonymous as a girl skunk. A wonderful way to costume a black dog. Reminiscent of the old Warner Brothers “Pepe le Pew” cartoons in which the girl skunk is really some other sort of critter.

Honorable mention:

To Dugan
– Again, less is more. A white collar and a black dog goes great for formal occasions.

To Mac Scottish – for keeping up Scottish traditions, which are important to many of these dogs, if not their owners.

To The Colonel – for having a costume that is practical and hard to shed as well as being “killer bee.”

Judge Merg II

My, what a hard time to pick from so many adorable scotties. They’re all winners in their own way. I’d love to give each of them their own scottie trick or treat dog biscuit!

After much deliberation with scotties Woody, Daisy, and Penny, we pick the skunk Anonymous. This little scottie looked like she was having so much fun we had to pick her. Plus, everybody knows that scotties can be little stinkers on occasion ;)

Next year, Scottie Dog News will hire Price Waterhouse to avoid this happening again.

Congratulations to the winners.

New photos have come to light of notorious Scottish Terrier disser Vladimir Putin — this time, communing with other animals. The Manolo shoe blogger has the condensed version while Pravda has the more serious unabridged slide show.

The winner of the first annual Scottish Terrier and dog News Halloween contest.

While you wait, here’s Chicago Scottish Terrier Zebedee clad in a circus lion costume constucted of seasonal corduroy and a full two yards of tulle to complete the mane and two paw bracelets. Writes his owner: “Zebedee was a great sport and wore that costume for about 3 hours with no complaints. I am happy to say that all that hard work paid off because we won the grand prize at the Andersonville neighborhood 2007 Howl-O-Ween Costume Contest.”

Scottie Dog News is glad Zebedee won that prize bcause, alas, he missed the deadline for our contest. But remember Zebedee, there’s always next year.

The Associated Press reports that A hunter is recovering after he was shot in the leg at close range when his hunting dog stepped on his shotgun and tripped the trigger.

Guess there weren’t any cats to blame.

It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Time to announce the finalists in our first annual Scottish Terrier and Dog News Halloween Costume competition. They are (in no particular order):

The Colonel aka Sting in a perennial dog favourite, the bumblebee costume

Anonymous in a skunk costume enhanced with a pretty pink bow

Dugan in a classic Tuxedo

Baily as the king, Elvis Presley

MacScottish in a classic kilt

Judge Merg will be making the final decision, and biting, whether before or after the winner is announced, is strictly forbidden. The judge has been asked not just to look for fabulous costumes but fabulous costumes that enhance the contenders’ essential Scottiness.

The winner will be announced on Halloween.

Coming up on Scottish Terrier News

Later today, we announce the finalists in the first ever Scottie Dog News Annual Halloween Contest.

ASAP, we have arranged an exclusive interview with Edinburgh Scottish Terrier, Callum, about what’s like to be a Scottie in Scotland? We know that Danish pastries don’t go by that name in Denmark so what, for example, is a Scottish Terrier called in Scotland?

The Queen has won yet another top award as the five dogs who played Elizabeth’s faithful companions won the inaugural Fido Film Awards.

This award is related to but not not to be confused with ongoing vote for the dog walk of fame.

A letter to Chicago Sun-Times’ dog lady:

Dear Dog Lady: Halloween is my favorite time of year. I even named Spooky, a Scottie, after the holiday although Spooky is not very scary. This is my problem. Each year, I try putting him in a costume and taking him out in the neighborhood but he refuses to wear anything. He howled until I removed the ghost sheet. He hated the pirate’s hat. Last year, I bought an elaborate pumpkin ensemble. He nipped at me when I was zipping it on and barked non-stop until I took it off. How can I train Spooky to be more comfortable in costumes?

Mariellen, Chicago

We like her answer.

Here’s a nice minimalist costume.

And a reminder. The Halloween contest deadline is tonight at midnight. E-mail us your photos or URLs at scottishterriernews@gmail.com

Jack’s owner writes to say that Jack the Scottie dog was neither drugged nor photoshopped — just tired. (And, we’re sorry to say, the victim of some bad photo styling and maybe a low-res cell phone shot.)

For now, the jury’s still out on whether Jack should be readmitted to the first annual Scottish Terrier and Dog News Halloween Contest.

Perhaps we’ll pass this thorny case on to Judge Merg and wash our hands of it. Or poll our readers…

Please send your photos of Scottish Terriers in costumes to scottishterriernews@gmail.com by midnight on Monday October 29.
