The MacBlog asks how much is enough when it comes to breeding dogs for specialized characteristics:
108 years of linebreeding has locked into our gene pool genetic predisposition for bladder cancer, among other genetic problems, making our breed some 20 times more likely to die of bladder cancer than other dogs. As a result, Scotties have the unwelcome ‘honor’ to be canine subjects for current NIH Cancer Research into the genetics of bladder cancer because the inbreeding over the past century that shrank our gene pool to a gene puddle inadvertently created a small, inbred, genetically imperiled, population ideal for genome mapping.

International Fire Fighting News reports on how a wiener dog was brought back from the brink of death:
Flynn said he’d never learned how to resuscitate a choking dog, but he applied the same techniques that he uses on infants. He and other firefighters thumped the dog on the back, hoping to dislodge the meat. They also performed the Heimlich maneuver repeatedly.
When that didn’t work, Flynn put his mouth over the dog’s tiny nose and tried to force air into his lungs.
“The fourth time I did it, I felt the air go into his lungs,” he said.
It definitely was a much closer call than the Scottie News‘ recent throat obstruction.

There’s an interesting discussion on chubby Scottie dogs going on in the comments of an older post. If you have any doggie diet tips, please join in.

No soooner does the Scottie Dog News promise to do a story on the Yorkshire Terrier crime wave than we get hit by some bad news of our own. Nothing serious, just a minor illness with one of the humans in the family, but the type of thing that turns your schedule upside down for days on end.
As a result, posting will likely be thin until later next week and the Yorkshire Terrier crime story is delayed yet again.

Birthday Westie, originally uploaded by ciaocivediamodomani.
The Scottish Terrier and Dog News is one year old today. And everyone’s celebrating — even the Westies.
According to Google Analytics, Scottie News readers like the home page best followed by posts about Scottie names and grooming. After that, they like to look at all the wonderful photos and check out the breeders lists. (See orange boz on the right for all the links)
Other especially popular pages are the little-known photo of notorious Scottie Disser Vladimir Putin with his secret poodle and our Robbie Burns day feature on Scottish Terriers and men in kilts. It’s a personal favourite too so if you haven’t already, go check it out.

P.S. We’ll have that Yorkie crime wave post for you by the end of the week. When we promised it for today we didn’t realize it was our birthday. We confused the dates and thought the 22nd was Friday. We’re taking the evening off to celebrate.
