June 2008

This video is from last summer’s Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition. This year’s version, which was held over the weekend, attracted some 60 pooches to Imperial Beach, California. The Scottish Terrier and Dog News didn’t spot any Scotties in the crowd, which may be a good thing considering their swimming abilities or lack thereof.

It’s also interesting that while some of these cool surfer dude dogs wear sunglasses and the latest beach fashions, other sport dog life jackets.

“The best thing about this event is that no particular breed seems to do better than others,” Anne Stephany, a spokeswoman for the resort, told the San Diego Union-Tribune. I’ve seen poodles, a bulldog, (a) Chihuahua. As long as your dog loves the water, they’re a great candidate for this sport.”

This nasty story was all over the headlines when I was in Toronto earlier this week. My stepsister takes her two miniature Dachshunds to High Park every morning so it hits close to home. Here’s what the Globe and Mail is reporting today:

The damage, whoever did it, was done last weekend, when six dogs visited the park and promptly fell ill. Two died and the others are recovering after emergency treatment.

A police investigation initially focused on water bowls near a fire hydrant, fitted with a tap and used by dog owners to quench their pets’ thirst, atop Dog Hill, the heart of the park’s large leash-free area. Later in the week, that theory was discounted and a loaf of chemical-laced whole-wheat bread was found near the 101-plot allotment gardens, which sit cheek-by-jowl with Dog Hill, inside the leash-free zone.

Only Scottish Terriers who weigh less than 30 lbs need apply to “It’s a Ruff Life Doggy Daycare.” Sounds like a good incentive to slim down.

The Scottie Dog Newsvideos of swimming Scots elicited a sad tale of a drowned Scottish Terrier puppy from Jurate.

It’s prompted us to remind everyone to be very careful if you let your Scots swim. After all despite, this handcrafted Dogfish, Scotties are most definitely not fish.

When we first got Bridget — who, by the way, turned two yesterday — I remember being struck by this warning on her breeder’s site:

Drowning may not seem like a breed-specific health issue, but pools are a big risk to Scotties – especially Scottie pups. They love the water and they love swimming, but they’re notoriously bad at it. Scots in the water must be closely supervised, and Scots in a pool or other abruptly deep water should be avoided at all costs. If you have a pool or pond, it must be securely fenced in before you get a Scottie, and your family must be committed to keeping things secure. I speak from experience on this: I sold a puppy to a family with a pool and pond, both fenced in, but their 10 week old puppy found a way in and drowned – this is heartbreaking for both owner and breeder. Scottie drownings in pools are such a problem that the American Kennel Club sends a warning about them to everyone who registers a Scot. Now, this doesn’t mean you can’t take your Scottie with you to the cottage! We’ve had all our Scots at the lake, and they’ve been fine because the waterfront has been very gradual and shallow. As long as they have the option to swim back when they (quickly) get tired, they can enjoy the cottage lifestyle along with you. Pools don’t usually provide this option. (Scottie-sized life jackets are more and more available these days – dogs who spend a lot of time around the water should no doubt have one.)

The Scottish Terrier and Dog News will try to put together a full dog lifejacket report over the next week, but, in the mean time, check out, the always handsome Doogs from Sweet Cottage Dreams, modelling his life vest.

Bella is a swimming champ but the Scottie Dog News is just a little bit uncomfortable with the sudden ending of this video which reminds us of Open Water.

And here’s Lana the Scottish Terrier swimming in Vis, Croatia, where I wish I were headed.

Unfortunately, I’m off in Toronto on business, so dear readers, comment away. Is your Scottie, a swimmer like these two female athletes or do you have a dog that sinks like a brick?
