Since we have kind of a movie theme going on here today at the Scottish Terrier and Dog News, here’s a great story about how the Cairn who starred opposite Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz won her role and beat out a whole bunch of Scottie contenders:
Numerous dogs, most purebred Scottish terriers, were brought in to impress Oz producer Mervyn LeRoy, but he wouldnt bite. He felt the dogs didnt look enough like Denslows drawings. The tale of the tireless search for Toto was even picked by the entertainment newspaper Daily Variety and thats where dog trainer Carl Spitz first saw the article. After examining Denslows illustrations, he knew the dog the artist had drawn was a Cairn terrier and he just happened to have one named Terry.Spitz rushed right down to the studio and he was greeted like royalty, or at least Terry was. As Spitz came into the studio, with Terry trotting along at his side, people connected with the Oz film started yelling, “Theres the dog! We found Toto.” Terry was a five-year-old female. Toto was supposed to be a male. But, of course, thats what acting is all about.

A heart-felt thanks to all you Scottish Terrier and dog News readers who’ve sent in pictures of your dogs. It’s taken a while for us to get around to it — due to the relocation of our world headquarters — but we’ve finally gotten it all together and are starting to post reader pictures. If for some reason your dog was overlooked, blame it on the move and please resend your photos, but give us a week or two to get all the photos up.
Getting started, here’s Morris, whose owner Erica describes him as the most brindle Scottie dog she’s ever seen, and we would have to agree. From the first shot he could be a tiger:

Here is Kawa, a one-year-old Scottie Westie cross from Singapore whose owners rescued him from a Singaporean puppy mill and gave him a good home. He’s a cutie!

Here’s Beatle who did a stint as a southern gentleman before returning to his northern roots in Vermont.
Callie the sCALLIEwag hails from Lincolnshire across the pond where she has, it appears, a jolly good hair stylist.
Here’s Artie, a very cool dude. If this photo looks familiar, it’s because it’s been featured here at the Scottie News in another incarnation.
And Artie’s back again, this time with Simon and minus the shades.
William Wallace, aged 1-1/2, is very manly, according to his owner. We believe it, as it takes a guy who’s totally confident in his masculinity to be photographed against a backdrop like that.

These are billed as West Highland Terrier but could they be Scottish TErriers? And is that Sonny singing? It sounds like him but not Cher? What do you say, dear readers?

Reuters reports from Wellington that “a pet food company has come up with a novel way of gauging the public mood ahead of the New Zealand’s general election… Masterpet has made rubber chew toys for dogs with likenesses to the two politicians vying to run the country after the November 8 election.”
The company has promised to make its sales figures available for pundits to chew over.
Wonder if this will inspire the pollsters tracking the American and Canadian elections.
On a similar subject, I recently walked my Scottish Terrier past a house with a lawn sign supporting the Green Party. Bridget chose to fertilize the patch of lawn directly in front of the sign. I scooped using a biodegradable bag.
