Famous Scottish Terriers

The popularity of the Scottish Terrier has been on the wane since the 1920s and 1930s when Scotties were the ‘it dog’ and pet of choice for both Hollywood stars and presidents. While they still have a select circle of devotees, including a handful of celebrities, they lag far behind the current number one terrier, the sadly cursed Yorkie, and and their Scottish cousin, the West Highland Terrier, for whom they are often mistaken.

Scottish Terriers to the stars

  • Corkey – Shirley Temple’s Scottish Terrier
  • African Queen and Kane Mutiny – Humphrey Bogart’s Scotties
  • Tibby – Bette Davis’ Scottish Terrier puppy
  • Jock – from Lady and the Tramp

Scottish Terriers with a White House connection

  • Barney Bush – Remember him? George W. Bush’s Scottish Terrier who bit a reporter during his last few days in office
  • Whiskie – The Scottie who played Barney in Oliver Stone’s movie, W.
  • Fala – FDR’s beloved Scottish Terrier shares a Washington memorial with his master
  • Scotch and Soda – Ex-president Ronald Reagan is said to have had two Scotties who lived on his ranch, but we can’t find any r
  • Telek and Caaci – President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Scottish Terriers
  • Jessie – Theodore Roosevelt’s Scottie
  • Hootchie – Jackie’ Kennedy Onassis’ childhood Scottish Terrier

Other Scottie dogs with famous (or infamous owners)

  • Titus – Lech Kaczynski, the Polish President’s Scottish Terrier
  • Laddie - Queen Victoria’s Scottie dog
  • Maggie aka Scottie – Carnegie Mellon University’s mascot Scottish Terrier
  • Burli – Rumoured to be a Scottish Terrier belonging to Hitler, but his existence his never been confirmed. Hitler’s mistress Evan Braun definitely did have two Scotties named Stasi and Negus

Here’s the official answer to Tuesday’s famous Scottish Terrier contest. And if you want to sing along, here are the opening lyrics to Love Story.

Where do I begin
To tell the story of how great a love can be
The sweet love story that is older than the sea
The simple truth about the love she brings to me
Where do I start

Don’t blame the Scottie News if the song gets stuck in your head today — or, worse yet, all weekend.

And if this is all bringing back fond memories from 1970, you can order  the movie at Amazon.

Wow and wow again! Yesterday the Scottie News discovered a whole Tumblr website dedicated to the fabulous Fala. It’s got so many photos and videos all in one place that we’re willing to bet even the most diehard Fala fans will find something they’ve never seen before. On top of that, all the videos have been annotated so you can skip right to the good Fala parts if you’re so inclined.

For example, in this Fala at the Beach video, the famous Scottish Terrier appears at 5:37, 6:10 (up on hind legs), 6:56 (surf fishing), 7:12, 7:26 (digging in the sand), 9:05 (treats on the boat).

Scottie News also likes this item from Eleanor Roosevelt on how Fala relished the role of first dog:

Fala Never Forgot

“Readjustments in one’s inner life have to go on forever, I think, but my main decisions probably were made by the end of the first year. It was Fala, my husband’s little dog, who never really readjusted. Once, in 1945, when General Eisenhower came to lay a wreath on Franklin’s grave, the gates of the regular driveway were opened and his automobile approached the house accompanied by the wailing of the sirens of a police escort. When Fala heard the sirens, his legs straightened out, his ears pricked up and I knew that he expected to see his master coming down the drive as he had come so many times. Later, when we were living in the cottage, Fala always lay near the dining-room door where he could watch both entrances just as he did when his master was there. Franklin would often decide suddenly to go somewhere and Fala had to watch both entrances in order to be ready to spring up and join the party on short notice. Fala accepted me after my husband’s death, but I was just someone to put up with until the master should return. Many dogs eventually forget. I felt that Fala never really forgot. Whenever he heard the sirens he became alert and felt again that he was an important being, as he had felt when he was traveling with Franklin. Fala is buried now in the rose garden at Hyde Park and I hope he is no longer troubled with the need for any readjustments.” —From “On My Own” by Eleanor Roosevelt, 1958

Head on over and check out this Fala treasure trove.

in Famous Scottish Terriers

In search of dog news, the Scottie News‘ special investigative unit recently stumbled across this item from Google’s historical archives:

Uh, oh, we thought. This looks like a variation on the destroyer-sent-to-pick-up-Fala myth that FDR had to address in his famous speech.

Luckily, once we clicked through to the original source, we discovered, it wasn’t President Franklin Roosevelt, but rather his son, Elliott, and the dog involved was a bull mastiff not a Scottish Terrier. Phew!

Elliott Roosevelt's dog causes seaman to be bumped from flight

Then we remembered that this dog had a history of trouble and had, in fact, once attacked Fala. It seems like trouble followed him around.

Former VP Dick Cheney's labradors Jackson and Dave dressed up for HalloweenDick Cheney didn’t just take aim at Condi Rice in his memoirs. He also had a few Putin-esque things to say about President Bush’s pal, Barney the Scottish Terrier.

The Daily Telegraph reports:

Dick Cheney’s labrador Dave was banned from the main lodge at Camp David after attacking President George W. Bush’s Scottish terrier Barney, the former vice-president’s memoir reveals.

The hefty Labrador often accompanied Mr Cheney to the US presidential retreat in Maryland. One morning he accompanied his master to the laurel lodge, where most official meals and meetings take place.

“No sooner had we walked inside did Dave catch sight of the president’s dog Barney,” Mr Cheney writes in an extract of his book “In My Time” that was leaked to “The Daily Caller” website . A “hot pursuit” then followed.

The dogs ended up in the dining room, as the wives of several cabinet members were enjoying breakfast.

Follow the link for the full story.

Scottie News thinks the dogs should have been left to sort this out themselves as long as it didn’t get violent, which it’s not clear to us it did.

Reader Sharon wrote yesterday to point out a timely and important Scottish Terrier connection that the Scottie News had failed to pick up on. There appears to be a Scottish Terrier on the cover of Amy Winehouse’s first album, Frank.

Dog on Amy winehouse album, Frank

Is the dog on the over of Amy Winehouse's album, Frank, a Scottish Terrier?

Apparently Amy Winehouse was a huge fan of Frank Sinatra and named her dog after him. There seems to be debate, however, over whether the album name, Frank, references the singer, the dog, both, or the act of being frank as in honest.

Unfortunately, the Scottish Terrier News has been unable to turn up any more information on the cover dog. We can’t confirm either who he is or what became of him. What we can confirm is that Amy Winehouse had a history of troubled relationships with pets.

The always original Interior Design Hound has a fabulous post on Jackie Kennedy’s canine style and her Scottish Terrier connection. The two photos below — one of which has appeared on the Scottie News before — are just a taste. Head over and see everything.

Like FDR, Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King was also a famous lover of terriers — but in King’s case, it was Irish Terriers. To each his own.

Mark your calendars. Next Saturday April 16th is Fala Day at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Pennsylvania.

“On Fala Day and throughout National Park Week, we are encouraging visitors to come with their dogs and take a walk, bring a picnic lunch and enjoy their national park,” said Superintendent Shean-Hammond. “April is a beautiful time to explore the miles of trails at Hopewell, French Creek and the surrounding Hopewell Big Woods.”

Read Scottie News‘ Fala archives where you can see rare pictures of FDR in a wheelchair along with his beloved terrier as well as video of the Fala speech.
