Famous Scottish Terriers

Who’re those cute guys?

The popularity of the Scottish Terrier has been on the wane since the 1920s and 1930s when Scotties were the ‘it dog’ and pet of choice for both Hollywood stars and presidents. While they still have a select circle of devotees, including a handful of celebrities, they lag far behind the current number one terrier, the sadly cursed Yorkie, and and their Scottish cousin, the West Highland Terrier, for whom they are often mistaken.

Scottish Terriers to the stars

  • Lena – Tatum O’Neal’s beloved Scottish Terrier, whose death “set her off”
  • Dublin – American Idol winner, David Cook’s Scottie
  • Puppy Dearest – Joan Crawford’s Scottie
  • Duffy - Julie Andrews’ wheaten Scottish Terrier
  • Corkey – Shirley Temple’s Scottish Terrier
  • African Queen and Kane Mutiny – Humphrey Bogart’s Scotties
  • Tibby – Bette Davis’ Scottish Terrier puppy
  • Jock – from Lady and the Tramp

Scottish Terriers with a White House connection

  • Barney Bush – Remember him? George W. Bush’s Scottish Terrier who bit a reporter during his last few days in office
  • Whiskie – The Scottie who played Barney in Oliver Stone’s movie, W.
  • Fala – FDR’s beloved Scottish Terrier shares a Washington memorial with his master
  • Scotch and Soda – Ex-president Ronald Reagan is said to have had two Scotties who lived on his ranch, but we can’t find any r
  • Telek and Caaci – President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Scottish Terriers
  • Jessie – Theodore Roosevelt’s Scottie
  • Hootchie – Jackie’ Kennedy Onassis’ childhood Scottish Terrier

Other Scottie dogs with famous (or infamous owners)

  • Titus – Lech Kaczynski, the Polish President’s Scottish Terrier
  • Laddie - Queen Victoria’s Scottie dog
  • Maggie aka Scottie – Carnegie Mellon University’s mascot Scottish Terrier
  • Burli – Rumoured to be a Scottish Terrier belonging to Hitler, but his existence his never been confirmed. Hitler’s mistress Evan Braun definitely did have two Scotties named Stasi and Negus

Other famous Scottie owners include E.B. White, Dorothy Lamour and Dorothy Parker.

The opening of the George W. Bush presidential library last week has caused a spike in news about the late first Scottie, Barney.

First off, there are some new photos of which the Scottish Terrier and Dog News especially likes the one of the Prez and Barney out fishing in Texas.

Uh oh, no lifejacket. Guess Texans don’t do that.

A portrait of Miss Beazley was also unveiled. Scottie News like its abstract qualities and finds it a little less sentimental than Bush’s Barney painting.

In other Scottie presidential news, NBC reports that “comedian Bob Hope used to tell an anecdote about Franklin D. Roosevelt housetraining his Scottish terrier, Fala, on the Chicago Tribune. It was a reference to Roosevelt’s greatest hater, Tribune publisher Robert R. McCormick, an orotund aristocrat who considered the New Deal indistinguishable from Communism.” Never heard that one before nor had I heard that Fala got a bone for breakfast every morning.

It’s a good life being a president’s dog.

Lana Terrier with Scottish Terrier puppy

Not just another casting couch

Here’s Lana turner with a Scottie puppy. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any back story and she doesn’t seem to have been a Scottish Terrier owner in real life.

Jayne Mansfield with Scottish Terrier and poodle

The Scottie appears to have had only a cameo role

A poodle costarred with Jayne Mansfield in Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?, often wearing accessories that matched the actress’ outfits. The Scottish Terrier, however, is a bit of a mystery. All we can guess is that he (or she, in keeping with the times) may have been the poodle’s much shorter love interest.

Finally, Martha Stewart, dog lover but not a Scottie person, shows how to have a perfect bed.

Here’s what President Bush had to say about the loss of his friend:

Laura and I are sad to announce that our Scottish Terrier, Barney, has passed away. The little fellow had been suffering from lymphoma and after twelve and a half years of life, his body could not fight off the illness. Barney and I enjoyed the outdoors. He loved to accompany me when I fished for bass at the ranch. He was a fierce armadillo hunter… Barney guarded the South Lawn entrance of the White House as if he were a Secret Service agent. He wandered the halls of the West Wing looking for treats from his many friends.

RIP, Barney Bush and our sympathies to the former first family.

The Scottie News has provided a lot of Barney posts over the years, which you can find in our archives.

The White House official collection of Barney photos can be found here.

Below is a painting that the former president did of his buddy Barney:

Update: Wendy comments that there are also many great photos on George Bush’s Facebook page.

Paul and Laurie Feig's Linus and Mary

Linus and Mary (both rescues)  behave like cats and interrupt the packing.

Linus and Mary belong to Laurie and Paul Feig. Paul is the creator of Freaks and Geeks and director of Bridesmaids, and Laurie is a producer too so these Scotties are Hollywood royalty.

Favourite son

Not only do they sleep on some great looking jackets, they get to have their photos taken for the Feigs’ New York apartment where the focal point is Frank Bruynbroek’s double portrait of Linus. “We have another dog, Mary,” Feig told New York magazine, “but she photographs like an old prospector, so she didn’t get the big wall.”

In other words, she failed her screen test. The Scottish Terrier and Dog News hopes that doesn’t mean Mary will be excluded from any Golden Globes celebrations. We wouldn’t want to have to call the Humane Society.

The Scottish Terrier and Dog News has received a few indignant emails about the fact that there is no Fala — aka the most famous dog in the world — in the new FDR movie, out today. And as you can see, according to the Hyde Park on the Hudson trailer below, they are indeed right.

But there’s a reason Fala is missing. The movie takes place in June of 1939 and he wasn’t born until April 1940.

Now, Hollywood being Hollywood, they could have, and probably should have, moved the birth forward a few months and cast a cute Scottish Terrier for effect, but for some reason they didn’t.

This is especially interesting given that Margaret “Daisy” Suckley, who is portrayed the President’s alleged love interest in the movie, is the one who actually gave him Fala as an early Christmas present.

Fala at FDR's funeral

Alleged love interest “Daisy” Suckley with Fala at FDR’s funeral.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Bill Murray, who plays FDR, says the president needed Fala:

“Mr. Murray, whose Roosevelt is attended by, and occasionally must elude, a small army of women—including his wife, Eleanor (Olivia Williams), his teetotalling mother (Elizabeth Wilson), and his secretary Marguerite “Missy” LeHand (Elizabeth Marvel)—offered typically Murray-esque perspective on playing the president. “Just working with these actresses—it was a henhouse, it was insane. The mother. The girlfriend. The wife and the secretary and the maids,” he said. “This guy was beleaguered. They were all after him. Thank God he had a dog.” (That dog, Fala, was famously trained by Daisy.)

If you’ve got time, catch up on the Scottie Newsprevious Fala coverage.

Let’s time travel back to 2004 when Karl Rove called on Barney to boost the Bush re-election campaign:

And then let’s go back even further and hear FDR’s famous 1944 Fala campaign speech.

A big thanks to Claire for telling Scottie News about the Barney video.

Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan with Scottish Terrier and Great Dane

Helen Keller with a Scottie at her feet, Anne Sullivan, Polly Thomson and Helga the Great Dane

Okay we’re not 100% sure that this is Anne Sullivan’s politically incorrectly named Darky, but it’s highly likely. The Great Dane, who belongs to Helen Keller, is supposedly called Helga, which makes for a somewhat uncomfortable name juxtaposition. But this is now and that was then.

The things you find on YouTube. Don’t you just love Bette’s dog-washing outfit? No aprons for her. I’m surprised she didn’t just wear the dress from her portrait.

Let’s ponder the big questions. Did Bette Davis wash MacTavish before the portrait so he didn’t get the dress dirty? Or did she just not care that much about the dress?

For all you Bette Davis fans out there, who can’t get enough, here she is in a glamour shot with Mac  and again with a Scottie pup called Tibby.

And if you don’t fancy The Hunger Games this weekend, you can stream All About Eve and other Bette Davis movies live from Amazon.

Fala and FDR lookalikes on cover of Life magazine 1958

Wow! I hadn’t been over to the Fala Tumblr since the Scottie News first discovered it, but whoever runs it  just keeps turning up more and more fabulous stuff. In short, it’s more wow-worthy — or should we make that bow wow-worthy — than ever.

From the Google news archives, we can also bring you a 1958 review of the play, Sunrise at Campobello starring Ralph Bellamy and an anonymous Scottish Terrier. And, yes, you can order the movie version on Amazon.

The Scottie News is still looking to find out more about the terriers (presumably, there was more than one) who played Fala.

From ModernScottieDog.com: Actress Ida Lupino with her two Scotties in the 1940s

Stuart of the Scottie Chronicles, who celebrated his birthday yesterday, also visited the fanciest dog park ever earlier in the week. Happy slightly belated birthday, Stuart!
A Scottish Terrier named Gyp figures in some sad World War II reminiscesalthough the dog’s story is comparatively happy.

There are updates to yesterday’s story about the Scottish Terrier in the lawn commercial.

And there’s a new Scottie site in town. Its creative director Connie writes: “I co-author a blog with my sister about the Modern Scottie Dog. We are two sisters living in MN and CA, both passionate about our Scottie dogs, blogging, and photography. I have been a long time subscriber to the Scottish Terrier News and look forward to many more of your newsletters, I added a link to your site in the category of news. We are both passionate Scottie owners and hope through blogging to share the rich history of this breed and its owners. We hope you will share our blog with your followers too. We will soon be launching our website, ModernDogLife.com, a lifestyle site for the modern family dog.”

If you have a Scottish Terrier website or event, let the Scottie News know and we’ll try to help publicize it.
